“Keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye.” – Proverbs 7:2
Have you ever been in love? No matter your age, we have all experienced it. For some, it’s been when they met their spouse, others when they encountered their dream job, and for many of us, the day we took a bite of that perfect cheeseburger. Perfect Godly love aside, we can all say there have been many things in life that have made us feel feelings of love.
If someone were to say that someone is the “apple of their eye,” they would be implying that person is most loved or cherished over anyone or anything else. One could say a toy car is the apple of a toddler’s eye.
The Bible has many examples of this. David once prayed, “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 17:8). Moses also spoke of God’s love for his people: “He encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye” (Deuteronomy 32:10). God cherishes us more than anything else, and we are to cherish him in the same way as well. Additionally, we are also told to cherish his commandments and his teaching (Proverbs 7:2). His Word and desires for us should be even more loved by us than even our spouses, our jobs, our belongings… cherished more than everything else in life.
Do you love God in such a way that even his Word and his teaching are at the forefront of your life? Is what you cherish more than anything else what He has commanded you and teaches you?
May we all take a hard look at what we can honestly say is the apple of our own eyes. Fall in love with and cherish God and his Word. He is the only one worthy of that kind of love and attention.
